In Portugal mode arises in the years 80 in Povoa de Varzim, brought by an emigrant in Brazil (Juliao Neto), that returning to his hometown began to play with some friends, including Washington Alves, father Bruno Alves (currently the great ambassador of the sport in Portugal). From the mid 90, the sport in Portugal had an exponential growth, drawing from the more or less unknown athletes, to other established as in the case of Bruno Alves, Helder Postiga, Pepe, Coentrão, João Moutinho, Nani, grandson, etc.

Em termos regionais, esta modalidade teve a sua primeira competição em 2012 na Marina do Lugar de Baixo, Ponta do Sol. Depois disso, a ACD Boaventura tornou-se no maior divulgador e organizador da modalidade na região, tendo organizado em 2014 e 2015 o Circuito Regional de Futevólei, a prova rainha da modalidade na Madeira e responsável pela atribuição do título de campeão regional. Em ambas as competições, a dupla João Sá/Norberto Sá, em representação da ACD Boaventura, sagraram-se os grandes vencedores e líderes do ranking regional.

Para além da competição regional, in 2015 a dupla campeã pela ACD Boaventura, representou pela primeira vez a região no campeonato nacional, participando em duas etapas, conseguindo em ambas apurar-se para os 1/8 de final. Ainda em 2015, esta dupla venceu aquela que foi a primeira prova organizada pela recém-criada Associação de Futevólei da Madeira, vencendo a Taça numa competição onde encontrou na final outra dupla representando a ACD Boaventura, João Caboz/Sérgio Vieira.
